Is Geoff Owen the reincarnation of Victor Trumper?
Who was Victor Trumper? - Trumper's most remarkable Test season was played in England in 1902. It was one of the wettest summers on record, yet Trumper in 53 innings scored 2,570 runs, and without a single not out had an average of 48.49. Harry Altham wrote: "From start to finish of the season, on every sort of wicket, against every sort of bowling, Trumper entranced the eye, inspired his side, demoralized his enemies, and made run-getting appear the easiest thing in the world." |

TEST SQUAD v AUSTRALIA
(Message from Gil)
Hi All and welcome to the new season . The major news is the confirmation that the Tour to Australia in November/December is now definite and the England Squad of 15 now selected .They will play 8 matches under Spitfire rules (almost) including three Test Matches in Australia .
Congratulations to Mick Swain , Martin Hall , and Jim Smallbone who have all been selected on merit for the Test Squad .
There are 34 other matches planned on the Tour , which includes the Festival at Armidale . These matches will be played under Aussie Seniors Rules which includes batting retirement at 40 we understand but there will be plenty of cricket for all . Currently , including the test squad , we have about 80 wishing to go of which 60 are players (and we have several umpires and scorers) and there are 3 matches per day so you can expect to play at least every other day if there are NO ???? injuries and more often if there are .
The cost is currently set at £2500 per person but could be reduced by about 20% if we get more players and wags but we need to know soon if you are coming to be able to set the deposit . This will be required in February and will be between £250 and £400 per person .
We are also planning 2 Test Matches for those who are 70+ and a provisional squad has been proposed .
If you are interested contact me asap and also register your name with Martin Couch.
Gil Collins.

STAN RUDDER - A CRICKET LEGEND
Stan Rudder died peacefully this morning - 30th. September 2010. We first came to know of Stan when our son told us about this guy who was well into his 60s and still a bowler to be respected. We then got to know him better when we became a part of the Hampshire Seniors 60+ set up. Stan opened the bowling well into his 70s and was still a force to be reckoned with. He won an England 60+ cap against Australia in 2009. He bowled for the last time for Hampshire 60+ in the first game of this season taking 1 for 22 but his illness then prevented further participation. He was none the less still there cheering us on in the quarter and semi-finals of the National 60+ Spitfire Championship, offering his advice and encouragement from the boundary edge. He was really thrilled to be invited to the Rose Bowl to bowl against Dominic Cork - the last time he bowled (see picture).
What a lovely man Stan was! It wasn't just his love of cricket but the way he played it - one of the true gentlemen of the game. He played to win but always with a smile and a respect for and an interest in, the rest of the team and the opposition. Stan had a zest for living. He went on all the Tours and what he did, he did with enthusiasm. He was always interested in developing young cricketers and had a deep knowledge and understanding of the game which he loved to share with others.
The love and respect so many people felt for him was evident at the Surprise Party thrown for him last year by his family. Click here to see the photos taken at the party
He was still dancing and joking when we left!!! We will all greatly miss his exuberance and his joy of living and send our condolences and best wishes to all his family.
Stan's funeral will take place on Wednesday 13th. October at 1p.m. at St Mary's Church, Fratton Road, Portsmouth, followed by a gathering of family and friends at Buckland Community Centre, Malins Road, Buckland in Portsmouth.
By Pat & Brian Hart.

STAN RUDDER - A LEGEND WAS BORN ON October 17th 1934
Happy Birthday
Click here to see the photos taken at the party
Yes, its true, Stanley is definitely 75 years old. I have seen his date of birth written down and I joined all his family and friends at his Happy Birthday Party in Portsmouth a few weeks ago.
Its funny how the word "legend" follows the word "leg-bye" in the dictionary. Stanley bowls so straight that if he hits your legs you're LBW out - no leg byes to him. But he is a legend. His name is famous not only in Hampshire cricketing circles but -through Seniors cricket - in many other counties as well. Even in Barbados he is remembered affectionately as a cricketing legend.
Many of our Seniors are of Stanley vintage. It is lovely to see pictures of Mike Swain - top of the Southern League bowling averages in 1986 sporting a very full beard and moustache - playing Representative and Gosport matches with Stanley. Also our distinguished former Havant opening bat and successful Captain Geoff Owen played alongside Stanley in the 80s. Stanley was a vital part of Havant and South Hants championship sides at the time. Jan Bridle, Pete Tapper, Neil Trestrail, Chris Wood, Jim Smallbone, John Harris Tony Wharton and Geoff Prouton can all recall Stanley
in his younger days.
From his early start with EEM cricket club in Portsmouth Stanley went on to get 621 Southern League wickets with a best 8 - 13 v Waterlooville in 1977. And can you imagine; a bowling economy rate of 2.53 over 30 years cricket. Hampshire C.C. you missed a bargain. But Stanley's cricket took off in the late 80s when he became a regular and very successful Hampshire Seniors player- he moved on to the over
Sixty XI and was very proud of his selection for England v Australia "Test" match this summer. He did though deny himself a Windies Test shirt by playing for England. Stanley, the Seventy + XI waits for you in 2010.
In wishing you a Happy Birthday Stanley we want to include Shirley, Eve, Philip and Clayton in our best wishes. There's only one question in my mind . You said "I played with Gary Sobers when we lived in the south east side of Barbados. To be honest he couldn't bat. I would say I was the better batsman than him" Ask him Stanley when you see him soon.
Many Happy returns, Stan
John Rickard
