The good news is that D & M Sports is continuing their sponsorship of the Southern Counties Seniors Championship for yet another year, thus the costs to the Counties of providing two new balls per game is vastly reduced.
Pat Wickson’s wishes for 2011 (I hope we can win more than we lose) came to fruition as the 50s 2nd XI performed very well losing only two of the eight Championship games, unfortunately both to Surrey. It is of course regrettable that Pat’s health prevented him from participating and in particular enjoying the double win against Dorset! After years of sterling work as Captain and Team Manager our wishes go to Pat for his recovery and many more years of enjoyment with the over 60s.
The 2012 season sees an expanded Southern Counties Seniors Championship with Gloucestershire entering the fray alongside Surrey, Bedfordshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire. League fixtures have therefore increased from 8 to 10. We have considered it prudent in 2012 to reduce the 50+A friendly fixtures to one from three. However, as our active player membership grows and in the interests of ensuring transition into Seniors Cricket for the forty something’s, we will look to reverse this step again in 2013.
I am sure we will have another enjoyable and competitive season in 2012 and (to crib Pat’s words) enjoy the opportunity to play quality cricket at pleasant venues against other like minded senior teams.
If you know of any active senior player (50 plus or heading that way) that may be available for midweek Inter-County cricket please bring them along to nets or give them my number (07789 652481), email JMK607@aol.com or simply advise them to look up the Hampshire Seniors Cricket Club website. It is imperative that the current batch of 50 year old players spread the word to their contemporaries and thereby establish contacts from which to rejuvenate and strengthen the club.
