Hampshire v Sussex
Hampshire's new season began with a friendly against Sussex who reached the National Seniors semi-final last year where they lost to the eventual winners Kent.
Missing five regular first team players Hampshire started well but collapsed halfway through their allotted 40 overs. Friendly, 40 over match. Martin Hall top scored on his "home Club" ground at Easton & Martyr Worthy but Sussex overhauled their target with two overs to spare
Hampshire v Oxford
Hampshire suffered their second pre season defeat when hosting Oxford.After posting a respectable total on the back of a second wicket stand of 120 by Owen & Swain with later support from skipper Wright & debutant Mitchell, the Hampshire bowling attack was put to the sword by the Oxford openers.
A first wicket stand of 204, dominated by big hitting from Caunce (9x6,14x4) who raced to 145 in 107 balls put the game beyond Hampshire and Oxford cruised to a 7 wicket win.
Hampshire v Bedfordshire
Hants entertained Beds at Hursley Park in a repeat of last years fixture and gave debut games to Ash Niak (Bournemouth) & Ian Britton ( Bashley).Batting first, Beds made a steady start putting on 57 for the first wicket before Niak was introduced to the attack. He produced an excellent spell of spin bowling (9-3-17-3) to remove the top three batsmen & Beds were in trouble at 78-3. Tiplady soon added a fourth wicket and it was left to Tibbett & Stubbs to put on 138 for the fifth wicket in 19 overs which enabled Beds to finish on a respectable 244-6.
Openers Ian Britton & Martin Hall soon reached 59 before Britton was stumped. Swain followed for a duck but Hall continued his good form, hitting a fine 65. Skipper Alan Wright (64) & Tony Adams (42) maintained the momentum supported by sponsor Leon Whitfield (22) & Hants cruised to a 4 wicket victory with 1.3 overs to spare.
