Hampshire v Devon
Hampshire Seniors opened their 2006 campaign with a trip to Sandford in Devon and came away with a convincing eight wicket win.
Devon were asked to bat on a damp wicket and were soon in trouble. Hampshire's opening attack - the veteran Stan Rudder and competition debutant Steve Mitchell, who bowled a fine spell (9-5-8-2) - n quickly had Devon struggling at 31-3. Only Macey 40 and Rogers 47, who put on 73 for the fourth wicket provided any real resistance. Steady bowling throughout, with Jim Smallbone chipping in with three wickets, backed up by 6 well taken catches (Duncan Fletcher please note!) saw Devon close on 166-9.
Hampshire replied strongly with John Harris, 27, and stand in opener Martin Hall, 62, putting on 87 for the first wicket when Harris was adjudged lbw. Hall was joined by Mike Swain, 39 not out, before Hall was stumped with the score on 145. It was left to Swain and skipper, Alan Wright to see Hampshire home - a solid performance which bodes well for the season ahead.
