Hampshire v Isle of Wight

The Seniors eased to a comfortable 8 wicket win when they entertained the Isle of Wight on Sunday to record their fifth win from seven Group games so far this season.

Hampshire won the toss, and with rain threatening, invited the IoW to bat. On the day the Seniors bowling resources were stretched but wickets fell steadily and after 32 overs the  IoW score stood at 105-5, with Jim Smallbone taking two wickets & Steve Mitchell & Pat Wickson one apiece. However, opener Dhillon (76*) & Warwick (57*) then set about the Seniors bowling, sharing an unbeaten 6th wicket stand of 97 in the remaining 13 overs, the IoW innings closing on a respectable 202-5.

In reply, Hampshire openers Barry Goodman (33) & Ian Britton (77*) put on 74 for the first wicket (their third half century opening partnership of the season) before Goodman was stumped. Mike Swain (68) then joined Britton, and they dispatched the IoW bowlers to all parts of the ground, taking the score to 197 before Swain was caught in the deep. It was left to skipper Alan Wright to score the winning runs – Hampshire now await results from other Group games to establish their final league position & hopefully qualification for the knock out stages of  the ECB 50+ competition.
