SURREY v HAMPSHIRE
The Young Seniors fielded with 9 ½ players due to (Peter Tapper getting lost for about 20 overs) and (Andy Donoghue, guesting at the last minute, having to drive from Wareham). Thanks to Peter Doust’s son David for fielding. This lovely venue produced the occasional odd bounce resulting in nine catches out of the 13 wickets to fall. Initially hostile Osborne (7-1-29-0) and metronomic Trapp (9-1-33-0) (with 9 ½ fielders) never allowed the capable opposition batsmen to get on top. However the captains astute bowling changes to P Doust (9-1-30-1) and P Wickson (9-1-27-3) (still without all our fielders) and A Yorke (8-2-25-3 our best bowler) finally helped by P Tapper (3-0-13-0) restricted Surrey to 164 for 7 in 45 overs. C Handley kept and took a sharp ct behind, a run out and two smart stumpings.
After a lovely tea we opened with T Adams 29 and debutant S Lent a capable 40. Donoghue and Doust didn’t succeed. C Handley 15 and C Babbage 6 were followed by our saviour P Tapper 36 not out supported by A Yorke 19 not out. They paced our comfortable win to the pre penultimate ball of the match.
There is justice as Peter Tapper now seems to have tweaked something although the rest of us athletes are fully match fit. Two wins out of two so its now Dorset’s turn on the 11th June.
P Wickson, Captain
