HAMPSHIRE v CHANNEL ISLANDS
After a stuttering start to the season – postponed fixtures against Devon & Wiltshire followed by a defeat in Cornwall, the Seniors finally recorded their first win of the campaign trouncing an ageing Channel Islands team by 127 runs.
Electing to bat, Seniors openers Tony Oxley (19) & Ian Britton (49) raced to 58 off 8 overs before Oxley was well caught at backward square leg. Peter Tapper soon followed. Britton was bowled one short of his half-century trying to force the pace & when Paul Kerley (18) was adjudged lbw the Seniors were 125-4 with all four wickets falling to left arm spinner Birkett. Chris Wood (48*) then joined skipper Alan Wright putting on 110 for the 5th wicket before a totally exhausted Wright was run out for an excellent 87 runs, the innings closing on a formidable 259-5.
Then followed the Barry Goodman show – in no time he decimated the Islanders top order taking the first 5 wickets leaving them shell shocked at 39-5 after 9 nine overs – his final analysis 9-1-27-5. Thereafter, there was no way back despite some stubborn resistance from the tailenders. It was left to Jim Smallbone & Andy Yorke with two wickets each to finish matters, the Channel Islands reply closing after 32.4 overs.
A comprehensive win with arch rivals Dorset next at Bashley on Wednesday 2nd July. Dick Batchelor - Scorer
