HAMPSHIRE V SOMERSET
The Seniors suffered a severe setback to their Group qualification hopes when they were on the wrong end of a resounding 121 run defeat against Group leaders Somerset.
After an excellent start by the Seniors snaring skipper Ashton without scoring, Stephenson (86) & Botton (92) then proceeded to add 188 runs for the second wicket within 30 overs aided by indifferent bowling & a disappointing fielding display as several catches were dropped. Somerset continued to pile on the runs led by Ashfold (52*), finishing with a formidable total of 319-6. Barry Goodman 4-72 & Steve Mitchell 2-49 were the Seniors wicket takers.
Requiring a good start to have any chance of victory the Seniors were dealt a body blow when Tony Oxley, lynchpin of the victories over Dorset & Devon was dismissed for 10.
Wickets fell steadily as the Seniors endeavoured to up the run rate with only Ian Britton (49) & Paul Kerley (42) providing real resistance. The innings closed on 198 with the Seniors well short - a confidence shattering defeat. Wins in the final fixtures against Wiltshire & IoW are essential if the Seniors are to have any hope of progress in this year’s competition.
