HAMPSHIRE V WILTSHIRE

The Seniors clinched a thrilling 2 wicket victory in the final over against close rivals Wiltshire which should ensure further progress in this year’s competition.

After an early success the Hampshire bowlers toiled in the warm sun as Newport (67) & Edmonds (116) put on 174 for the 2nd wicket. Debutant opening strike bowler, Chris Noble (7-0-28-0) bowled steadily whilst Steve Mitchell (9-1-47-2) & Mark Tiplady (7-1-30-3) performed well as Wiltshire piled on the runs finishing on 259-6.

In reply, Hampshire started poorly & were in trouble at 121-5 with only 20 overs remaining. Only Martin Hall of the top order made any real contribution before he was run out for 40. However the middle order came to the rescue as Chris Wood (58), Barry Goodman (35) & Mark Tiplady (37 – including 3 consecutive sixes) made steady inroads into the Wiltshire total. It was left to Andy Yorke (15*) & Steve Mitchell (10* including 2 fours in the final over) to steer the Seniors home.

The final fixture against the Isle of Wight scheduled for Tuesday 29 July will not now take place as the cut off date of 24 July has passed.
