HAMPSHIRE v ESSEX

In brilliant sunshine at Liphook Essex won the toss and opted to bat. On a slow wicket Essex had difficulty scoring runs against the excellent bowling of Stan Rudder (9-1-19-2) and John Hall (9-3-17-1) who restricted Essex to 44 for 3 after 15 overs. Hampshire’s very good fielding display was epitomised by Martin Hall who ran out two of the Essex batsmen with very accurate throws. Unfortunately one of the Essex batsmen, Bland, had to be taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder after diving in an attempt to avoid being run out. Tight bowling by Jim Smallbone (9-2-20-1), Chris Westbrook (9-1-34-0), Tony Allum (6-0-27-2) and Mickey Swain (3-0-17-0) restricted Essex to 152 for 8 from their 45 overs.

In reply Geoff Owen and Neil Blackey put on 80 for the first wicket before Blackey was unfortunately run out for 36. Martin Hall came in and accelerated the run rate finishing on 35 not out with Owen on 70 not out as they passed the Essex total in the 39th. over on 153 for 1, thus winning by 9 wickets.

A spectator was heard to say that this was a very professional win! Hampshire have now won 6 out of 6 matches and are the only unbeaten side in the league.
