SUFFOLK V HAMPSHIRE

It was on a very cold afternoon at the ground in Woolpit, Suffolk that Suffolk won the toss and put Hampshire into bat.

The opening partnership made 39 runs before Blackey was out for 15. A slow wicket and the tight bowling of Perrett kept the run rate low but Watson 26 and Hall 24 batted steadily. Swain batted very well for another unbeaten score of 75 assisted by Bridle who was also not out on 30. Together they pushed the score to 194 for 5.

The Hampshire bowlers got an early wicket with an excellent catch by Swain off the bowling of Hicks (9-1-28-3). Rudder (9-2-17-0) again bowled accurately and kept the run rate down throughout his overs. Hicks and Westbrook (9-1-28-2) removed the top order but it was Collins’ looping Chinamen in combination with the “Salmon-leap” catching of wicket keeper Bridle which saw off the middle order. Swain (8-0-35-0) and M. Hall (3-0-12-1) kept the final score down to 159 for 9. Which means that Hampshire won by 35 runs – a very pleasing win!

Pat Hart – Scorer.
